Examinations Update, Professor Michael Griffin
As Committee Chair, I am pleased to provide an update for this issue of the Examinations Newsletter
In the last two months the Colllege has contributed expertise to examinations in two international centres.
Dr Fauzia Sangani attended the inaugural Qatari Final Board Examination for anaesthesia & intensive care residents as an extern on Sunday 26th November 2023 in Doha.
Drs Patrick Seigne, Brian Kinirons, Ellen O Sullivan and Michael Griffin attended the first in person CANECSA final exam and first CANECSA Annual Congress in November.
We were accompanied by Eric Flynn and Juan Carlos Puyana (RCSI Global Health Chair). The 11 countries have a population of 250 million served by 400 anaesthesiologists. CANECSA plan to rapidly increase the number of trainees graduating from their programme supported by their sister surgical organization, COSESCA with funding coming from RCSI Global Health and Irish Aid.
CAI will continue to support the development of their examinations, advise on training and sponsor a Medal for the best examination candidate.
We continued to deliver the MCAI OSCEs, Final FCAI, JFICMI Clinical and the Pain Fellowship clinical in person.
The conferring of our graduates in June was a highlight of the year and it is always wonderful to see our graduates celebrate with friends and family.
Our medal winners this year were Dr Yvonne Fahy, Membership Medal (Autumn 2022) and Dr Bianca Nicholls Membership Medal (Spring 2023). The recipients of the William and Jane Brophy Medal which is awarded to the 1st Placed candidate in the Final Fellowship Examination are Dr Daire Kelly (Autumn 2022) and Dr Alison Fahey (Spring 2023)
Huge congratulations to all of these trainees.
I would like to thank all our examiners for participating in SOE exams but also for writing questions, setting standards and correcting papers.

Examiner Participation 2022
We would like to acknowledge the exceptional examiner support by Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda Hospital and Beaumont Hospital departments who had the most consultant examiner participation in 2022.
These hospitals have provided support to the College in its examinations process over the last number of years and for this we are most appreciative. Without the hospital departments’ support, we could not successfully deliver the examinations.
