President's Welcome

Dear Colleague, One of the many privileges of the post I occupied is that I see first-hand the selfless altruism of many colleagues who contribute to the College in so many different ways. Some of these are visible, but for many, their contribution is driven not by the need for recognition but by the desire to make our speciality and training better for those who follow us. The is especially evident in relation to the examinations. Our greatest strength as a College is this spirit of altruism. Our greatest challenge as a College is to keep this spirit alive and vibrant.

Our examinations are internationally recognised high quality, high stakes exams. One of the most significant challenges for the College during the pandemic was in the area of examinations. The College was keen to ensure that the pandemic did not impede career progression. Central to this, was the ability of our training community to access exams. Reconfiguration of both MCAI and FCAI to a remotely delivered, remotely proctored exam was an enormous undertaking. That this occurred, in a relatively short period of time, is a testimony to the commitment of the examination committee and department.

“Our greatest strength as a College is this spirit of altruism. Our greatest challenge as a College is to keep this spirit alive and vibrant.”

I would like to recognise the efforts of Professors David Honan, Michael Griffin, Dr. Gareth Morrison and Ms. Ruth Flaherty and the entire examinations committee and department who have led this change. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the College examinations department in the delivery and quality assurance of the first College of Anaesthesiologists of East Central and Southern Africa exams.

Thank you.

Dr Brian Kinirons

President, CAI

The Examinations Department would like to thank Dr Kinirons for leading the College through the recent exceptionally challenging times. We wish him the very best of luck in his new role and we hope to see him back in Merrion Square soon.
